Over the last decade, network operators' infrastructure has undergone a major metamorphosis, driven by the virtualization of network functions, the convergence of access networks with 5G, and the centralized control of resources. Virtualization raises many challenges. One of the most important issues is the placement of services. The issue of service placement can be seen as a resource allocation problem, in which strategies differ according to: (1) the type of resources considered (i.e., dedicated or shareable), (2) the type of service, and (3) the location in the network. Over the last few years, I have been able to develop my expertise on this subject, with an interest in modeling, as well as solving difficult optimization problems in networking using, in particular, learning techniques. This presentation gives an overview of the research activities I have been able to conduct. It is a subset of selected studies that I believe reflects my main activities and achievements.
