Title: Gaining threat intelligence from the darknet: Is AI/ML on attackers' minds?

Presenter: Dr. Sven Dietrich, Professor, Department of Computer Science, City University of New York (Hunter College & The Graduate Center)

Abstract: A lot of security research has focused on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to protect networks, computers, and systems. However, AI can also be used for offensive purposes, in order to devise and orchestrate more targeted and sophisticated attacks that are executed at higher frequency and larger scale. For the purpose of threat intelligence, this study explores the empirical evidence for the offensive use of AI in the wild, using a state-of-the-art Natural Language Processing (NLP) technique based on topic modeling. The empirical evidence for this study is based on a vetted collection of discussions in underground forums and the darknet, which provide an intriguing global perspective of the miscreants' activities.

Our findings reveal that attackers exhibit a strong interest in learning more about AI. They actively seek advice on AI techniques, search for easy-to-use AI tools, discuss potential malicious applications of AI, and exhibit an increased interest in the circumvention of defensive mechanisms using AI. Our results also suggest that AI is likely to be drawn into the arms race in cyberspace, which in turn is giving rise to a new threat landscape as well as ethical concerns with respect to dual-use AI tools.

Biography: Sven Dietrich is Professor in the Computer Science Department at Hunter College at the City University of New York (CUNY), where he started in August 2020. He is the Director of the Computer and Network Security Lab in the Computer Science Department at CUNY Hunter. He has also been affiliated with the PhD program in Computer Science at the CUNY Graduate Center since 2015. Prior to joining CUNY Hunter, Dr. Dietrich was Associate Professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Assistant Professor in Computer Science at Stevens Institute of Technology, Senior Member of the Technical Staff at Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute and CERT Research, and Senior Security Architect at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

Dr. Dietrich’s work has focused on network security, especially on the analysis of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, botnets, and the mitigation of such attacks, formal verification of security protocols, applied cryptography, software security, malware, and the ethics of computer security research. He has co-authored the seminal book on DDoS, "Internet Denial of Service: Attack and Defense Mechanisms" (published with Prentice Hall in 2004), that reports on the initial discovery of DDoS attacks in 1999.

He has supported various security conferences as Program Chair (most recently IEEE CS SADFE 2020), General Chair (SACMAT 2022), Steering Committee member (Financial Cryptography and Data Security/FC, German Informatics Society Detection of Intrusions Malware and Vulnerability Assessment/DIMVA), and Program Committee member. He has served on the IEEE Computer Society (CS) Board of Governors, and also as the Technical Activities Chair there, managing around 30 Technical Committees and Councils. He is currently the Vice Chair for the IEEE CS Conference Activities Committee.

Dr. Dietrich has a Doctor of Arts in Mathematics, a MS in Mathematics, and a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics from Adelphi University in New York.
