The paper presents a case study given to students during a course on protocol validation. The example is the classical alternating bit protocol specified in Estelle. The work asked to students consists in some simple modelisations, simulation of the specification and verification of some basic service properties with Veda and observation of distributed executions of the protocol instrumented with timestamps followed by trace analysis. We argue that this kind of experiment is very useful for students as a complementarity of a course.
