ATM was originally designed to provide wireless access and mobile services. The extension of "fixed" ATM to mobile end points through limited bandwidth, unreliable wireless links is a challenge for the lower protocol layers of the radio interface. The support of mobility, on the other hand, requires the modification and enhancement of existing ATM signalling and network control protocols.
In this presentation we review these issues with some emphasis on mobility management and handover algorithms in wireless ATM networks.
